Opportunities with the
Voyageurs Wolf Project
We’re often asked about internships, volunteer work, and how to get involved with the Voyageurs Wolf Project. Unfortunately, we do not have short-term or periodic volunteer opportunities. However, we do have seasonal field technician opportunities for our summer and winter field seasons, which are great opportunities for early-career individuals looking to get hands on experience in the field.
Seasonal Field Technician Opportunities
We have openings every year for field technicians to assist with our summer and winter field seasons. Technicians assist with most aspects of our work including tracking GPS-collared wolves to identify kills, documenting abandoned den and rendezvous sites, estimating prey populations, deploying/maintaining remote cameras through the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystems, and much more. While field technicians assist our project, our objective and hope for field technicians is that the experience is highly-beneficial for them on a professional and educational level. We want to help technicians develop a robust skill set, provide invaluable professional experience in and out of the field, and be a launching board for early-career individuals by providing invaluable experience that enables individuals reach their professional goals. To learn more about these opportunities and how to apply, see below!

Summer Field
Technician Position
Every year, we have opportunities for summer field technicians to help with our summer fieldwork, which is focused on studying wolf predation and reproductive ecology in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem.
Season Duration: April 20 through November 15
Location: Orr, Minnesota
Compensation: Monthly stipend provided
Housing: Provided for the duration of the position
What to Expect:
-
Daily hiking in remote backcountry terrain
-
Investigating wolf kill sites and gathering biological samples
-
Measuring and characterizing den and rendezvous sites
-
Maintaining and deploying trail cameras
-
Navigating challenging weather, terrain, and wildlife conditions
-
Collecting GPS data and field notes that contribute directly to peer-reviewed research
Note: This is a physically demanding position. While we don’t have strict educational requirements for our field technician positions, we prioritize applicants with proven experience in remote, outdoor, and wilderness settings. The work we do often takes place in challenging backcountry terrain, and technicians frequently operate alone in isolated areas. That means we’re looking for individuals who are not only comfortable being outdoors for extended periods - but who can navigate, problem-solve, and stay safe in rugged conditions.
We also require prospective applicants to be available during the entire season, which we understand does not work well with some college semesters.

Extensive snowmobiling, backcountry skiing and snowshoeing across frozen lakes and deep snow
-
Investigating clusters of GPS-locations from collared wolves to locate kill sites
-
Maintaining a large array of remote trail cameras
Note: Winter fieldwork is physically and mentally demanding. Applicants should be comfortable spending long days outdoors in the cold, navigating snow-covered terrain often alone and in remote areas. While we don’t require specific degrees, prior experience in wilderness settings is favored. Availability for the entire winter season is also required.
