Opportunities with the
Voyageurs Wolf Project

We’re often asked about internships, volunteer work, and how to get involved with the Voyageurs Wolf Project. While we do not offer traditional internships or volunteer opportunities, there are still ways to engage with and support our work—and potentially work with us in the field.

Seasonal Field Technician Opportunities

The Voyageurs Wolf Project occasionally hires seasonal field technicians to support our summer and winter research seasons. These positions are limited and we typically post announcements about technician openings on our social media pages and newsletter.

Summer Field
Technician Position

Every year, we hire several Summer Field Technicians to assist with our research on wolf predation and reproductive behaviors in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem.

Season Duration: Mid-April through early November
Location: Orr, Minnesota
Compensation: Monthly stipend provided
Housing: Provided for the duration of the position

What to Expect:

  • Daily hiking in remote backcountry terrain

  • Investigating wolf kill sites and gathering biological samples

  • Monitoring den and rendezvous sites

  • Maintaining and deploying trail cameras

  • Navigating challenging weather, terrain, and wildlife conditions

  • Collecting GPS data and field notes that contribute directly to peer-reviewed research

Note: This is a physically demanding position— While we don’t have strict educational requirements for our field technician positions, we prioritize applicants with proven experience in remote, outdoor, and wilderness settings. The work we do often takes place in challenging backcountry terrain, and technicians frequently operate alone in isolated areas. That means we’re looking for individuals who are not only comfortable being outdoors for extended periods—but who can navigate, problem-solve, and stay safe in rugged conditions. If you can demonstrate confidence and competence in wild places, you’re the kind of candidate we want to hear from!

We also require prospective applicants to be available during the entire season, which we understand does not work well with some college semesters.

Winter Field
Technician Position

We also hire Winter Field Technicians to support our fieldwork during the snow and ice-covered months. This season largely focuses on winter predation along with maintaining a large array of trail cameras.

Season Duration: Early January through the end of March
Location: Northern Minnesota (snowshoes and grit required!)
Compensation: Monthly stipend provided
Housing: Provided

What to Expect:

  • Snowshoeing across frozen lakes and deep snow

  • Investigating fresh wolf kill sites and backtracking wolf movements

  • Working in extreme cold and often unpredictable winter conditions

  • Collecting high-resolution data on winter prey selection and pack behavior

Note: Winter fieldwork is physically and mentally demanding. Applicants should be comfortable spending long days outdoors in extreme cold, navigating snow-covered terrain—often alone and in remote areas. While we don’t require specific degrees, prior experience in wilderness settings is essential. The ability to stay safe, self-sufficient, and adaptable in tough conditions is key. Availability for the entire winter season is also required.
